When did Mary Mag. become labeled a prostitute?
In the third century Hippolytus identified Mary M. as the woman (who was a sinner) who put ointment on Jesus' feet and wiped them with her hair. John 11:1–2 says this woman was Mary of Bethany, Lazarus' sister. Pope Gregory I, in 591, said that Mary M. was all the women who were unnamed, as well as the Mary of Bethany story, and Mary M.'s own story of having devils cast out of her. That started the concept that Mary M. had been a prostitute. Even though this idea was generally accepted in the church, the Catholic church is clear that Saint Mary Magdalene is not Mary of Bethany, or any other woman who was named as a sinner, but the woman who went to Jesus's tomb. From the Bible, I would say that Mary was just a very sick or troubled woman who was healed by Jesus and who followed him as a disciple. <*)))><
