Why do the poorest in our society not help themselves?

Because eating, smoking and drinking numb your sensibilities to the real state of your life and your expectations. Also the next generation takes its standards from the one before and so the circle goes on even though it is in a downward spiral. If you don't catch a child's imagination before it is 5 forget it - it follows its elders and knows of no other way to live.
