How did this start? Culture of wearing hats ?

this must be really interesting. this fashion of nearly 3 centuries[ though not continued widely now], of wearing hats, caps, crowns[jeweled as that of a king or feathered as that of a tribal chief] or adorning the head with something as a symbol of dignity, respect, power, how, when, and where did it start? especially common poeple wearing it after renaissance? 10 pts to those who bring up a reasonable answer.........
